Summary:
The liquid natural gas (LNG) weathering process in storage tanks refers to the change in the constituent composition of the fluid remaining in the tank, as ambient heat leaks into the tank and gas vapor of different composition is released to contol the tank pressure. The definition and time dependency of the LNG composition change is of great interest to vehicle and fueling station operators, as those characteristics define when fuel maintenance procedures must be instituted to maintain the quality of the fuel, in terms of minimum methane content or Wobbe number, that is delivered to the vehicle engine. The objective of this research was to verify the analytical weathering model developed under a previous project. Several different compositions of charged LNG were weathered in a specially designed and instrumented facility until the remaining LNG liquid in the tank reached levels of methane concentration below 50 percent. In three experiments, nitrogen was added to the charged LNG in concentrations up to 6 percent, on a molar basis, to simulate the use of high nitrogen LNG in vehicle applications. Close correlation was found between the test results and the predictions of LNG composition change made by the computer model.
