Pipeline Purging Principles and Practices Research

Addressing the need for review and revision of pipeline purging practices, this research identifies industry concerns on specific technical issues of minimum purge velocity, time to complete a purge, and the slug shortening process. The recommendations, calculations, and survey questionnaire are included in the report's appendixes.

Summary:
Addressing the need for review and revision of pipeline purging practices, this research identifies industry concerns on specific technical issues of minimum purge velocity, time to complete a purge, and the slug shortening process. The concerns are well founded, and this work provides specific solutions and recommendations on each of the issues which will ultimately lead to safer purges. The key products resulting from this work are: 1) a software package for planning purging operations and modeling any single purging configuration [software package is not included with this product]; and 2) recommendations for revising Chapter 8 of the American Gas Association's "Purging Principles and Practice," the so-called Purging Manual. In addition, technical papers on the subject were presented at two international conferences. The results focused on the development of a velocity criteria for avoiding stratified flow conditions; the development of a revised Inlet Control Procedure embodied in Table 8.1 of the Purging Manual; and the application of a gas mixing model for predicting the time to complete direct displacement and inert gas slug purging operations. The recommendations, calculations, and survey questionnaire are included in the report's appendixes.
