Summary:
Cavity completion mechanisms causing formation stimulation were investigated in the reported work, using a synergistic approach involving numerical modeling, field data assessment, and laboratory experiments. Numerical modeling was used to explore the existence of a "permeability-enhanced zone" beyond the physical cavity, to determine the typical size of this zone and its dependence on the formation's in-situ physical and mechanical properties, and to estimate the contribution of the permeability-enhanced zone to overall wellbore productivity. Field data assessment examined cavitation procedures, pressure, and production data from nine Amoco cavity completions and recompletions, in order to investigate field practices and stimulation results relevant to this research. All the wells were located in the "fairway" region of the San Juan Basin. Laboratory experiments included tests on coal block samples for development of failure/permeability criteria. Appendixes include details of numerical modeling, field test data, discussions of pulse analysis procedures, other additional papers, and a bibliography.
