Characterization and Measurement of Natural Gas Trace Constituents Volume II: Natural Gas Survey

A program to survey the detailed composition of pipeline gas from several major producing areas of the United States, imported Canadian gas, and natural gas used to generate electricity at four power plants is reported. It was conducted to assess the possible presence and concentration of certain trace constituents having potential impact on the operation, utilization, and environmental aspects of natural gas. Many achievements and products resulted from this project.

Summary:
A program to survey the detailed composition of pipeline gas from several major producing areas of the United States, imported Canadian gas, and natural gas used to generate electricity at four power plants is reported. It was conducted to assess the possible presence and concentration of certain trace constituents having potential impact on the operation, utilization, and environmental aspects of natural gas. Many achievements and products resulted from this project. A list of target natural gas components of environmental and engineering concern has been formulated with analytical detection limits. A complete field sampling and analysis system has been developed and validated, including proportional sampling, cryogenic sampling, sorbent sampling, and on-line measurement techniques. A natural gas sampling team has been trained and a fully equipped sampling van developed for field trips. The accumulated knowledge and experience on sampling and analysis and the assembled equipment are ready for technology transfer to the gas industry. The results of the program provide a comprehensive body of information on the concentration of major, minor, and trace constituents of the surveyed gas streams, useful for evaluation of environmental or operational significance and for the construction of a future database on trace constituents. Appendixes detail the laboratory and field procedures.
