Summary:
The objective of this program was to analyze samples of polyethylene (PE) gas pipe failures, suspected to be due to static discharge, and then assess the affects, determine probable causes, and provide recommendations for field operations. Connecticut Natural Gas Corporation (CNG) provided several pipe samples exhibiting pinhole defects that were analyzed at GTI Testing Laboratories in Des Plaines, IL. Samples were analyzed using several methods, including scanning electron microscopy and stereo-optical microscopy. It was found that many steps involved in the gas pipe squeeze-off procedure, while working to prevent an external spark on the pipe, actually increased the probability of an internal static discharge occurring. This research resulted in several recommendations for safety procedures, use of bypass lines, the effect of tracer wires and spacers, and filtering.
