Summary:
This project consisted of both experimental field exposure and inspection of existing coating systems at the soil-air interface where pipelines come above grade. The experimental field exposures were designed to evaluate the performance of nine coating systems applied over a fusion bonded epoxy base through the soil-air transition zone. Field inspections were performed on 100 pipelines in the transition zone where the coating systems were more than five years old. From these investigations, it was determined that the coating system needs to extend a minimum of two feet below the transition zone; the transition zone coating needs to be well blended with the pipeline coating; and the transition zone coating system performance can be enhanced by a top coat of paint to minimize degradation from ultraviolet light.
