Summary:
AThis report presents a technology roadmap of applied research that is required to enhance domestic unconventional gas production, the results of which will enable exploration and production companies to develop currently uneconomic gas resources and meet U.S. natural gas growth demands. Unconventional gas resource types include gas from coal seams, shale gas, low permeability sandstone and carbonate reservoirs, ultradeep reservoirs, and emerging plays/frontier basins. Feedback regarding technology problems and barriers that inhibit development of unconventional gas resources was acquired from a diverse group of active industry, academic, and government petroleum personnel during a series of regional focus group workshops. Results are organized and presented by technology, play types, and geographic region. A matrix scheme for possible research program progression was developed for both the short-term development/applied research stage and the long-term exploration/basic research needs stage. Several mechanisms are proposed to achieve an uninterrupted supply of domestic natural gas to meet the predicted gas consumption growth demands, including: sponsor R&D for technology projects through cost-shared arrangements; promote technology for independent operators; utilize national labs for the development of new ideas in research; and develop and maintain feedback in order to assess the results of technology development and research efforts.
