Summary:
This report documents work carried out to assess the coalbed methane (CBM) potential of the Mannville Formation coals of Upper Cretaceous age within the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin (WCSB). The report documents both historical and current CBM activity that has been carried out within the Mannville Formation. Three CMB play types are defined on the basis of various key parameters, including depth to coal, coal rank, structural setting, and gas content. The identified play types include one along the eastern margins of the basin at relatively shallow depths; a more speculative second play type within the deeper part of the basin; and a third play type west of the deformational front on the western margins of the basin. Significant attributes of these coal measures include the large, blanket-like distribution of the coals within the basin, historically low water production, and modest permeability of the coals demonstrated along the eastern margin. The report concludes that the Mannville Formation coals offer the most attractive CBM potential in the WSCB.
