Directional Drilling and the Installation of Plastic Gas Pipes Under Railroad Crossings: Analytical Evaluations

Summary:
The goal of this project was to enhance the reliability and safety of the gas distribution piping system through the appropriate design and use of plastic pipes under railroad crossings. Extensive investigations were conducted to identify and evaluate the currently available modeling methods used for computing loads exerted on, and deformations and stresses experiencedmby, plastic gas pipes installed at various depths under railroad crossings. Finite element analyses were used to determine more accurately the deformations, strains, and stresses experienced by plastic gas pipes under railroads. The project also evaluated whether horizontal directional drilling (HDD) technologies can be used safely under railroad crossings. Results indicate that the use of HDD can be just as safe and reliable as the currently permissible auger boring method. It has been determined that high-density polyethylene (HDPE) gas pipes have substantially high structural integrity. At a burial depth of about 10 feet, the factor of safety would be greater than three. The results of this study, the fact that PE plastic pipes do not experience the corrosion processes that occur naturally in metal pipes, and the demonstrated excellent structural and field performance characteristics of plastic gas piping over the last 30 years, strongly indicate that PE pipes can be very safely installed underneath railroad crossings.
